Did you know Via Ferrata means Iron path in Italian?
This practice goes way back in the Alps, fixing hooks and ropes to facilitate communication between mountain villages. It is in the mid 1800s that it took a more "touristic" turn.
In the 70s and 80s it started growing in popularity and it was mostly the climbing community in the Dolomites and northern Alps that helped grow the via ferrata paths. But in the 2000s it became more commercial and promoted as an extra spring/summer/fall activity in the mountain. Via Ferrata only arrived in Switzerland in 1993 and now counts almost 100 routes just in the Valais.
